Authors, Addressees, and Audiences in Roman Letters

This conference focuses on Roman letters from Cicero to Sidonius, and on the relationship of author, addressee, and audience. Each speaker will introduce either an individual letter or a small dossier of related letters for discussion.

This is an in-person event. Outside participants are very welcome to join us in Edinburgh, but please register with Giulia Marolla so we can distribute texts in advance and can plan catering.

Bari-Durham Writing Letters

On 25 and 26 November, an international colloquium will be held of early career researchers in ancient epistolography, organised by the Universities of Bari and Durham: ‘Writing Letters in the Ancient World: Fictional and Real Letters from the First Century BC to the Fifth Century AD’.

Keynote speakers: Roy Gibson and Ruth Morello.

Giulia Marolla is to speak on ‘Sidonius, Letters Book 5: Between Literary Fiction and Autobiography’.

Camille Bonnan-Garçon (Lyon) writes about Sidonius’ favourable image of Theodoric and about the changing roles of letters and panegyrics for praising monarchs in Interférences 11, 2018. She has just finished her doctoral dissertation: ‘L’épigramme et la lettre d’Ausone à Ennode de Pavie: étude stylistique, littéraire et historique d’une contiguïté générique dans l’antiquité tardive’, doctoral thesis June 2018 (supervisors Marie Ledentu and Bruno Bureau, Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3).
