Müller Reviews Hanaghan

‘Insgesamt verdient es Hanaghans Studie, zu einem Standardwerk der Sidonius-Forschung zu werden’ is the conclusion of Gernot Michael Müller’s review of Michael Hanaghan’s 2019 monograph Reading Sidonius’ Epistles.

Giannotti Reviews Mascoli

In BSL 51,2, July-December 2021, pp. 719-21, Filomena Giannotti reviews Patrizia Mascoli’s recent Italian translation of Sidonius’ correspondence:

  • ‘Patrizia Mascoli … corona … una militanza più che ventennale su questo significativo letterato’
  • ‘uno strumento di sicura utilità’
  • ‘in un sottile ed equilibrato processo di mediazione fra il riprodurre quanto possibile della tessitura di partenza, e mantenere … una lingua d’arrivo sufficientemente lineare, la sua prima traduzione italiana integrale di Sidonio consegue il risultato di rendere finalmente leggibile … uno degli autori più lambiccati e complessi della letteratura latina.’

Mastandrea Reviews the Companion

Paolo Mastandrea writes a review of the Companion in the Classical Review, FirstView 12 August 2021. He values the volume as ‘a well-structured and accessible text that does what older friends [i.e., many other companion volumes] should do: to assist the non-specialist or less-experienced scholar’. He signals the odd ‘fundamental contribution’ and ‘some fascinating surprises’. He thinks Sidonius’ Christian inclinations as an author should not be overstated and points out a number of (indirect) borrowings from Ennius.
