Your Research Companion

This website focuses on Gaius Sollius Apollinaris Sidonius, a fifth-century Gallo-Roman aristocrat, high official, poet, letter writer, and bishop of Clermont (Auvergne) – a key figure in the transition of the later Roman Empire to the early Middle Ages and the dawn of Europe as we know it. It provides news on publications, conferences, and scholars in this field. It contains materials for the study of Sidonius, featuring, among other things, an up-to-date bibliography and files for download such as the complete Latin text of the poems and letters according to Christian Lütjohann’s authoritative 1887 edition.

SAxxi Project

The site is also home to the SAxxi project, ‘Sidonius Apollinaris for the 21st Century’, which aims to produce state-of-the-art commentaries on Sidonius’ poetry and prose. A comprehensive introductory volume, The Edinburgh Companion to Sidonius Apollinaris, was published in March 2020.

The project is based in Edinburgh (Prof. Gavin Kelly, https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9523-5907) and Nijmegen (Dr Joop van Waarden, https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4720-5751). The SAxxi project has been supported by funding from the British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust.
